Who We Are:

Tearmann Domestic Violence Services, Monaghan, under the voluntary management of Tearmann Housing Association Ltd. is a community based Information & Support  service providing a range of services for women and children who are or have experienced domestic abuse.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF TEARMANN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SERVICES

We believe that domestic abuse is a serious crime against women. Its presence has been continually disbelieved and ignored in our society. Victims can be made to feel ashamed, isolated and often responsible for the abuse. We believe that every woman has the right to an abuse free relationship. We encourage abused women to take control over their own lives. We provide information and support to women, but never impose our own solutions on them. We believe the crime of domestic abuse crosses all social boundaries and that any woman can be a victim. Therefore, the organisation is non‑sectarian and non‑racist regardless of class, creed, sexual orientation or physical ability.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our overall Mission is to contribute to the elimination of domestic abuse in County Monaghan through the provision of support, information, awareness raising and education. We seek to break the silence surrounding the cycle of abuse so that women will be empowered to explore and make appropriate choices that will impact positively on themselves and their children.

VISION

We wish to break the silence surrounding the cycle of abuse so that women will be empowered to explore and make appropriate choices that will impact positively on themselves and their children.

VALUE STATEMENT

We believe that Domestic Abuse is a crime that should not be tolerated by society; and it is both a civil and human right to be treated with equality and respect within relationships.

Our Service

Tearmann offer a secure, caring environment where a woman can feel free to tell her story. For many women, this will be the first time she has spoken openly about her situation. She is supported in coming to terms with the realisation that Domestic Violence is a crime and she is not alone in her experience as it crosses all social, religious, educational and economic boundaries.

In a non-judgmental atmosphere a woman is provided with relevant information on the services available to her. She has the freedom to explore options which enables her to make an informed decision on her future, whether this is to remain in the situation or pursue legal options available to her.

SERVICES PROVIDED:

  • Information & Support

  • Help‑Line: offering callers a confidential non‑judgmental listening service, where the caller can recognise if  they are experiencing domestic abuse. They are provided with information on their options and the range of services available to them. A visit may be necessary when dealing with issues, which are not practical to discuss on the phone. All contact with the woman is kept strictly

  • Drop In or appointment based visits are available Monday to Friday between 9.00 am - 4.00 pm. A woman can drop into our centre to discuss her situation in a secure confidential environment. She will be provided with information on the various services she may need to make contact with i.e. medical, legal, social welfare and  housing. We realise how difficult it may be for a woman who has experienced domestic abuse to decide what is the best solution for herself and her children and we try to provide her with the information she needs to come to a decision.

  • Court Accompaniment ‑ this service is available to women who are pursuing legal options through the court system such as obtaining an order, breaches of orders and judicial or legal separations . It involves providing emotional support for a woman at a time when she may feel frightened and isolated.

  • Advocacy/Accompaniment ‑ Staff advocates on behalf of clients and accompany them to relevant services as appropriate.
