You are at: Legal Issues >>> Civil Legal Aid

Civil legal aid is a scheme making the service of solicitors and barristers available to people of limited means at very little cost. The service includes anything from writing a solicitors letter to representing you in court.

How Can It Help Me?

If you need to talk to a solicitor about a legal separation, maintenance, barring orders, custody of children, etc..

How Do You Qualify For Civil Legal Aid

If you are on social welfare, you will qualify. If you are working it will depend on your "disposable income." That is what money you have left over after certain allowances have been taken out i.e. dependants, rent, mortgage, hire purchase repayments, work travelling expenses, etc.

How Much Will It Cost

If you are on social welfare, or on an income of less than €8,300 it will cost you €6 for advice, and €29 if you go to court.  On an income of €8,300-€13,00 the client would have a higher contribution to pay, and on an income of over €13,000 a client is ineligible for legal aid.  If you are working the cost will depend on your disposable income. If you have capital resources above a certain amount, you may have to pay extra.

In cases of severe hardship it can be free.
